The closest town is Radda in Chianti (3km), which is southeast of Florence is (52 km) and northwest of Siena (25.km). Both cities are served daily by infrequent public buses. It is not realistic to plan staying here without a car.. All of the Tuscan and Umbrian towns worth visiting (Lucca, Pisa, Arezzo, Cortona, Volterra, Assissi, Urbino, Orvieto, Pienza, Montepulciano and San Gimignano) are within an easy day's drive, and a vast number of smaller, lesser-known but exquisite little villages are within a 10 km. radius making it an ideal base for frequent excursions.
The closest train stations are Montevarchi (frequent trains on the Rome-Milano line) and Siena (poorly linked for the most part)., both 25km distant.
Take the A1 autostrada Milano-Roma (direzione Roma) as far as FIRENZE CERTOSA (3-4 hours) After the toll booth, take the first right onto the Superstrada for Siena as far as the SAN DONATO exit (15-20 minutes) and go left over the bridge towards CASTELLINA, following the signs to Castellina (13 km).
At Castellina turn left towards RADDA IN CHIANTI, following the signs all the way to Radda (8 km). Go through the village of Radda and follow the hill down until you cross a narrow bridge (about 1 km from the town) and continue straight-on, downhill, and slightly to the left, ** following signs for Lucolena and immediately afterwards for Montevertine.
**From this point you will go exactly 600 meters on this road to the beginning of our road - a dirt track on your left into the woods, mailbox, dumpster and sign with our goat on it. There is a large, stuccoed modern house directly across the road on your right (the only one on this road). CHECK YOUR SPEDOMETER OR YOU WILL DRIVE RIGHT PAST IT!
Note: the distances are exact - please pay attentions to the last paragraph, or you will go straight past our road and across the valley and who knows where you'll end up!! At night there are two small red reflectors on our sign. You CANNOT get lost if you follow these directions exactly!!
Take the A1 Milano - Napoli in direzione Firenze as far as the VALDARNO exit (the one after Arezzo) - it should take about 2,5 hours from Rome. After the toll booth turn right towards Montevarchi, crossing OVER the autostrada (work being done - if it is not clear at any point follow signs for Montevarchi or Gaiole or Siena) to the BIG round-about, and continue straight in direction of GAIOLE. Continue in this direction following the above signs (Gaiole or Siena), passing under the train tracks and then stay on this road for approximately 18 km until you reach the first and only turn off at Badia Coltibuono for RADDA to the right.
Follow this almost all the way to Radda. At 1 km before town there is an AGIP gas station on your right; take the next turnoff to your right, and at this intersection you will turn right again, in the direction of SELVOLE or ALBOLA (you will also see the first road sign for LA PENISOLA on your right (our goat logo on it).
From this turnoff it's exactly 600 meters (downhill) to the beginning of our road into the woods on your left (mailbox and goat sign at the beginiing of the road) - there is also a second road sign now just before you get to it, so it should not be hard to find . . .
Get instructions from your hotel to Firenze Certosa, and go past the entrance to the Autostrada and next right onto the Superstrada for Siena as far as the SAN DONATO exit (15-20 minutes) and go left over the bridge towards CASTELLINA, following the signs to Castellina (13 km).
